Full Version: TJ rear brake lockup

1998 TJ, 206K miles.. I replaced all hard lines, but none of the brake hardware since it all looked good was recently replaced by the PO. Truck brakes mostly solid and straight, but left rear locks up before anything. I double checked the connections to the MC and have the front port feeding the rear brakes which I think is correct. Ideas?

The small resevior feeds the rear brakes. Sounds like you might have the offending side adjusted too tight or the opposite side not adjusted enough.

How are your axle seals?

I was thinking that too, but even in that situation I wondered why the fronts wouldn't grab first.

I haven't seen leakage, but at that mileage they could be toast.. What are you getting at? Right rear soaked, left rear grabs?

The oil soaked pads will grab first.

Seems counterintuitive, one might think they'd "slide".

I checked them last night and all the hardware as well the pads seemed OK, but the drum obviously had been wet, probably from the rotted hard lines. I guess I'll replace the pads and see what happens.

I know. Same thing goes for oil soaked clutches.

I always thought that the oil soaked pads grab because they have expanded from absorbing the oil.
