I need some experienced eyes... What are these two things?

My best guess is that this is some sort of starter relay? It's attached to the inner passenger side fender near the battery. Despite the zip tie, it looks like it belongs there based on mounting holes that are drilled there and look factory. Here's another view from above.

One of the two 10 gauge or so wires is wired to the battery, the other goes to the starter. The red wires go through the firewall, presumably to the ignition switch but I didn't have time to trace them.
This... I'm not sure. By the
wiring diagram on the CJ5 page, I'd say it's most likely the Voltage Regulator?

Here's the data plate. I just think it's cool to have.

Looks like the starter solinoid and the voltage regulator to me.

Exactly as stated, starter solenoid and voltage regulator. What engine do you have? F-head? ( not that it makes a difference, just wondering)
Rusty the Scoob
Jul 5 2006, 09:42 AM
Apart from the wiring, it's a relatively clean and unmolested F-head.

Is that a custom coil mount I see??? JK, looks pretty clean. How's the body? IIRC I have a fender up in Stowe??? Haven't got my butt in gear to get up there. Is it better than yours?
Rusty the Scoob

The body is functional for what I want... which is to wheel it and eventually practice some body work. Should be good enough to pass inspection and get a plate in VT. Eventually I'd like it to have CJ5 door openings again.
The coil mount is not my fault.

But it'll do for now.
Yep, you have a fender at my place... I'd say your fender is about as good as mine. Both tweaked a little but pretty solid.

Looks funtional as is, completye w/ECJ5 wheel chock

Looks like it was built in December of 1962. 13 years and 4 months before I was born.
http://www.mninter.net/~molsen/jeep/VIN/Ve...ntification.pdf Makes sense, it has top-mounted manual wipers, and the battery box cover on the cowl.

Thanks! It's a decent little rig as it sits. I'll need to get it on some trails and knock the bondo off of it and then decide what direction to take it in. I want to do a resto eventually, but this jeep isn't going to be it unless I get a new tub along with a few hundred other pieces... I'll definitely be hitting you up for parts when I know what it needs to be running in the mean time.
It's hard to tell in the pics but the jeep was originally a sort of metallic teal... reminded me a bit of the Egg.

Thats it! You'll have to sell it to me as that's when I was born! Dec. '62.

Too True! If I bring another JEEP home, I'll be a dead man. Would like to have a '62 someday though.

It will need a new frame, too.

I'm not sure that this is the 62 that you want.

although really with some cleanup and a new tub it'd be a very decent jeep.

Look at the LF(driver's) frame rail, just about where the front grill is. Some one cut out that section of frame, and welded a new one in. The welds look pretty crude, and who knows how accurate the length of the new frame patch is on that side.

Free 64 frame here. Needs a little work.
Come and get.

Thanks, John! when I figure out what direction this is going in I might be in the market for a good frame. First I have to get it running...

The starter solinoid should be mounted on the starter itself.
I also have all sorts of CJ5 parts here.
9" brake setups
Running F head (elec ignition, weber carb)
carbs
oil bath air cleaner
non running F head
T-90s
D18s
axles
hood
rebuilt steering box
stock brake MC
stock rims/tires
stock exhaust
more...
bring a trailer, I'll give ya a NEWJO discount!

Wow.... you're well stocked!
I might be tempted to put together all or most of another 5, find a new tub, and swap the good parts on my 5 over to make one good one.... someday. First I just want to get mine running and driving. Basically it's my learner jeep and I'm cautiously diving in with both feet.
Is that starter solinoid in the wrong spot? If I want to get the starter motor moving, can I just hook up a battery, and touch the two red leads together in lieu of properly connecting the ignition switch for now?
John O
Jul 6 2006, 07:40 PM
The solinoid isn't in the factory position obviously since it was swapped with an aftermarket one. I'll shoot a pic of mine.
If you connect the battery and hold a jumper between the battery terminal of the solinoid and the middle smaller terminal you will run power to the starter.
BUT...the solinoid runs its ground off the mounting strap. Since its just tie-wraped in place it may have a weak connection. I'd put even one mounting bolt in to make a better connection.

Sweet! And you're pretty close to me, too... or at least on the way. Once I get this one running and have a plan in place, I may want either this or John O's frame....

My ECJ5 didn't had a starter solenoid mounted on the firewall (looked to be the original location) as well as the starter button in the middle of the floor.
Those regulators can be a little tricky if they don't work...good news is they have replacements available everywhere. The 6V system in my 56 worked good and there isn't all that much to the wiring. 2-3 circuits max.
Have fun with that thing.
